You are responsible for your own careers, plural. You need to be curious, to look for opportunities that interest you, and not be afraid to take risks – Beth Nickels
With the economy changing, new trends and innovations arising at rapid pace and people living longer, it isn’t a question of if you’ll change careers but how often. Even if you stay within the same company, you’ll likely change roles.
Are you staying curious and alert to what is happening around you?
Are you staying updated on the news in your area?
Are you keeping in touch and adding to your connections?
Are you learning new skills and raising your hand for new experiences?
Life is a series of comebacks – Tom Scott
If we embrace that life is about comebacks, then it means we need to try again. And again. And again. It means these subsequent efforts may lead to the comeback. But then it also means new problems will arise, requiring another comeback. So we need to try again. And again…
Don’t’ fear failure then. It’s all in a day’s work.
The more a person limits himself, the more resourceful he becomes. —Soren Kierkegaard
Perhaps you think you need more time, more money, more skills, more connections? How can you do without and get things done anyway?
As an entrepreneur this may mean learning a new skill rather than hiring it out. I know I’m much more tech handy than I ever thought I’d be.
As a manager this may mean giving a junior person a stretch assignment before s/he’s ready.
From a day-to-day standpoint, you might give yourself less time and find the resourcefulness to get things done more quickly. This can help you maintain boundaries between your work and personal life.
Are you waiting for the perfect conditions to get started? How can you make do with what you have?
Money isn’t everything, but it ranks right up there with oxygen.” – Zig Ziglar
Agree 100% with Ziglar here. There is lots of passion talk – do what you love and money will follow. Maybe, maybe not. But getting your money in order certainly helps you be clear-minded and confident so you can follow your passions more vigorously.
Money supports your living expenses and therefore your dream and therefore your life. In this way, it is like oxygen.
Don’t be afraid to prioritize money!
We do not so much look at things as overlook them. —Zen proverb
When I read this quote, it made me stop and think about what I am overlooking. What are you overlooking?
I am guilty of overanalyzing and also getting wrapped up into my own thoughts. What is going on around you just waiting to be noticed, appreciated, and seized?
One thing I tend to overlook is what works and what I have done; I tend to fixate on what went wrong or what more I still have to do. What is already working in your life? What have you already accomplished today, this week, this past year?
If we all did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves – Thomas Edison
Are you playing full out?
How can you astound yourself?
Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere – Albert Einstein
When you are stuck on a decision, force yourself to think of twice as many solutions. Now think of two more solutions than even that.
When you’ve identified a big problem, ask: what if it wasn’t that way?
When you’re scared to move forward, ask: what is the best thing that can happen?
Imagine yourself forward.
Fall seven times. Get up eight – Japanese proverb
You propose an idea at the team meeting and it falls flat. You ask for a raise and don’t receive it. You pitch for a deal and don’t land it. You ask your kid to clean their room and find it undone. You submit a guest blog inquiry and get a rejection. You notice an interesting profile on LinkedIn and send an invite that is unanswered. You watch your carbs all week and the scale still does not budget.
Obstacles abound both professionally and personally. What is the eighth thing you will try?
You don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate – Dr. Chester Karrass
Do you ask for what you want or do you fume in silence over what you get?
Do you practice making a case for yourself, speaking with confidence and overcoming objections, or do you wing it and hope for the best?
Negotiation is a critical skill for professional and personal success. Negotiation articles and videos are available in the SixFigureStart Negotiation Toolkit.
Everybody has talent. It’s just a matter of moving around until you’ve discovered what it is – George Lucas
Are you moving around enough to discover your talent?
